Safeguarding

The Steiner Academy Frome is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.  All pupils, regardless of age, special needs or disability, racial/cultural heritage, religious belief or sexual orientation have the right to be protected from all types of harm and abuse.  Our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy forms a fundamental part of our approach to providing excellent pastoral care to all pupils.  We are dedicated to ensuring that consistent effective safeguarding procedures are in place to support families, children and staff at school.

Sometimes we may need to make a referral to the Children’s Services when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns are discussed with his/her parents/carers at first, unless we have reason to believe that such a move would place a child at further risk.  If a member of staff is concerned about a child’s welfare, he/she will record their concern, and any observations or conversation heard, and report to one of the Designated Safeguarding Team as soon as possible the same day.

Safeguarding is not just about protecting children from deliberate harm.  It relates to many aspects of school life.  Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility. Everyone who comes into contact with children and their families has a role to play in safeguarding children.  In order to fulfil this responsibility effectively, all professionals should make sure their approach is child-centred. This means that they should consider, at all times, what is in the best interests of the child.  Source: Keeping Children Safe in Education. 2018

Our commitment

The Steiner Academy Frome (SAF) endeavours to support the welfare and safety of all pupils through:

  • Maintaining children’s welfare as our paramount concern
  • Ensuring the content of the curriculum includes social and emotional aspects of learning
  • Ensuring that child protection is included in the curriculum to help children stay safe, recognise when they don’t feel safe and identify who they can talk to
  • Providing suitable support and guidance so that pupils have a range of appropriate adults to approach if they are concerned
  • Promoting a positive, supportive, neutral and secure environment where pupils can develop a sense of being valued and heard in their own right
  • Ensuring all steps are taken to maintain site security and pupils’ physical safety
  • Working with parents to build an understanding of the school’s responsibility to ensure the welfare of all children including the need for referral to other agencies in some situations
  • Ensuring all staff are regularly trained to recognise the signs and symptoms of abuse and know what to do if they have a concern about a pupilAll staff are aware of the school’s procedures and lines of communication
  • Monitoring pupils who have been identified as having welfare or protection concerns and keeping confidential records which are stored securely and shared appropriately with other professionals
  • Developing effective and supportive liaison with other agencies
