"The Steiner ethos is one of awakening the creative force that is in every child and letting it grow..."

Frequently asked questions

How is the learning organised in SAF?
Each school day will be very structured and at all times the children know what to expect; they learn to respect the learning mood in the classroom from the peak concentration of the Main Lesson at the start of the day to the more relaxed mood in such lessons as handwork. The school day is from 9.00 – 15.30 for all children older than 9. For younger children the full school day is introduced gradually. The kindergarten day finishes at lunchtime every day.

Why is full-time school introduced gradually?
Children are introduced gradually to a full day at school on the grounds that the learning experience will be tiring for young children and that the benefits of the Steiner curriculum are maximized when young children have sufficient time to play. Parents of young children will be asked to sign a home/school agreement that states that they understand and support this view. Afternoon care will be available for children whose parents are working, or are unable to have their children at home for the afternoon for whatever reason.

Kindergarten ends at 13.00 every day
Class 1 ends at 13.00 three days a week
Class 2 ends at 13.00 two days a week
Class 3 ends at 13.00 one day per week

When will my child learn to read?
We believe that there are many other things that young children need to learn before they begin to read and write, like social and emotional skills, kinetic skills, skills to do with the world around them. With time to learn these skills the introduction to formal learning will be easier. Pupils start formal learning, such as the alphabet and numbers, at rising- 7 when they can approach this challenge with ease and enthusiasm.
